Red Canoe Design + Development

[ Philosophy ]

Co-founded by Caroline Kavanagh and Deb Koch, in late 1997—Red Canoe—a design and development firm.

“Success” for Red Canoe is largely defined and attained by following our mission to do work we love with people we enjoy.

It’s working!

< as we live – so we work >

As we enter our ninth year, we have evolved. We continue to discover the arenas within which we excel and within which we enjoy our highest levels of passion.

We are concept people.

We are convinced that effective design utilizes words as much as it does imagery or typography.

Buzz words annoy us.

As points of reference—some of them are unavoidable.

“Branding”—it is today perhaps more important than it has ever been. Red Canoe’s work is always, in part, about successful branding. Print and Web work, work together to establish cohesive branding.

What is it? “Branding” is an honest representation of the personality of and the promise behind a company.

We are big picture strategists and detail and consistency fanatics.

We see each client as a Red Canoe investment. We begin each project with the presumption that we will create a winning solution for that client and for Red Canoe.

We win design awards not because we design for design, but because our designs succeed in fulfilling their purpose and reaching their audience. The purpose and function drive the form. The form exemplifies clean and smart design.

< so we live – as we work >

[ News / Facts ]

NEW RED CANOE WEB SITE

– Long-overdue, we are paddling away on our new Web site. Our “Just the Facts” philosophy for our site will once again prevail. When we designed this site (2001) we had about 10 note-worthy projects and six awards to feature. The site was sane as one HTML page with text-only. It did not scroll nine hundred miles to the right. Our new site will eventually be driven via CMS. Our interim site will begin showing our print work. Updates for new clients, projects and awards have been largely abandoned on this current site as we expend our “free time” on the new site. Meanwhile, please phone us or e-mail to receive our printed portfolio booklets.

PETER SYLVÁDA WEB SITE

– Long-time fans of San Diego, CA-based illustrator, Peter Sylváda, we are excited to work with his work as we design and develop a new Flash-scripted, Website along with a print promotion. The new site has recently been launched! .

POTTERING AROUND WEB SITE

– We are pleased to welcome to our Red Canoe family, Pottering Around (The English Gardener), a Chicago-area based, landscape installation and design studio. Their experience, Flash-scripted Web site launched August 2005.

BOOK COVERS

– Busy with our favorite things! From Inspirational, to Feminine Fiction, to Political Exposé–to business reference–to self-help, some dozen-plus titles sporting Red Canoe book jacket designs hit the stores in 2004-2005. Many new covers for 2006 are in progress.

CONSULTING

– We are presently working on brand-development, naming, and business strategies with a start-up food-industry business. An e-commerce site will soon display the results of our brand consulting with a new logo, graphic user interface design and product photography by Red Canoe.

RENEE RHYNER PROMOTION

– The successful 2002-2003 “Stories Cards” series promotion for Renée Rhyner's group is continuing as a collectible series campaign. Newly packaged and well, NEW, “Every Picture Tells a Story” started mailing in early 2005, featuring photographers Fredrik Brodén, Holly Lindem, Beth Perkins and Misty Keasler. Happily the new promotion has won more than five design awards and has been spotted for an upcoming Rockport Publishers book (2006).

– Last year's promotion received honors including: PDN/Nikon 19th annual self-promotion competition for “Best Ongoing Campaign; Established Talent.” (November 2003), HOW International Design Annual, and STEP inside design 100 Annual (Spring 2004). The pieces were shown in DesignNet and appear in the Rockport book, Graphic Design America 3, by Jenny Sullivan.

NAMING, REBRANDING, LOGO

– For a rapidly growing imprint from the Thomas Nelson Publishing Group, we were pleased to serve as naming and branding consultants. There following we desgined the new logo and letterhead system. The Nelson Current imprint publishes non-fiction, current affairs - political books.

LISA L. CYR PROMOTION

– Created to accompany the launch of Lisa's new book, The Art of Promotion, her AXIOMS promotion rolled off the canoe factory lines in January 2004. It quickly took a feature spot in an upcoming Rockport book (2005). [See FEATURES] and has gone on to garner several design awards [See AWARDS].

– Lisa has set up a Web page containing informatin about her book.
